I ain't no dancer either

music: my neighbors listening to Smashing Pumpkins

The secret to drawing a hoodie is adding the strings.

This one goes out to Ed, who edited an anthology on his new press, New Reliable Press. You Ain't No Dancer is wee, and it contains new work from awesome artists, some of whom I even sort of know and will be meeting this weekend!

This book is available at fine comics shops everywhere, and if they don't have it, you should ask them to order it! You can also order through the website and get free shipping until October 1st!

The cartoonist's eye

We finally met fellow Grinder and Chicago resident John Campbell! He didn't kill us, so that was pretty cool. The art show was called "The Cartoonist's Eye," at Columbia College, and is curated by Ivan Brunetti. We had brie and beer! Classy! I spotted such "stars" as Chris Ware, Dan Clowes, and Jeffrey Brown, and Seth gave a slideshow presentation/talk. Completely awesome. The exhibit runs until October 22nd, and you should totally go if you live around here.

What? Where have YOU been?

a birthday comic

This weekend was Tom's birthday, and I drew him an eight-page minicomic. Here is a scan of the back and front covers. I'm not scanning the whole thing because 1) that makes it seem like less of a present, and 2) it's pretty cheesy stuff inside anyway. What do you guys think of the logo? More stuff to come soon, I promise.

If I'm going to start drawing my daily life, I might have to start wearing different clothes. I swear, I at least change the t-shirt under that sweater (sometimes).

For Tom's version of some of Monday and Tuesday's events, see this comic. A much more faithful rendition of the sweater is available there, although Tom drew breasts in it, and I don't know whose breasts those are. Also: Nate! My stereo! My denim jacket! My drunk wobbly legs and drunk talking about the Canterbury Tales, even.

In other news, the next panel of "Couples Skate," the comic Tom and I are working on, is done:

Hope you enjoy; I'm off to sleep and maybe have a job interview tomorrow.

stick that in your craw

Today's comic brought to you by Chicago Comics, the new Stephen Malkmus album, and executive producer Dick Wolf. I've been trying to read comics that inspire me and that look like what I want my drawings to look like. I'm unreasonably proud of my drawing of John Porcellino (copied from page nine of King-Cat #62).

Also, that stripey sweater? I really do wear that sweater all the time. I've had it since I was twelve. It's my favorite ever.

some things that happened today

I went to a bar and only drank two beers, but since I'm a lightweight and bad at drawing, it made my drawing way worse than usual even. Tom tried to show me how to draw a hoodie and I was being too drunk to understand and now I'm going to sleep.

Adventures in Perspective

Can you tell I never took art classes in high school?

That's my roommate Jessica on the bed, except I drew her very poorly. Sorry, Jessica. Also, Paisley is missing part of an ear--that's why it looks like that, although it's pretty clumsily drawn, I admit.

I could sit here and point out faults with my comics all day, but that's your job.

Tom and I drew this together last night. The first line of dialogue is lifted directly from an episode of Dr. Phil we watched last week. We'll be working on this continually.

P.S. Welcome to my website!
